In our busy world, we often forget to pause and just be. Take a moment today to engage your five senses and ground yourself in the present:

👀 Sight: What do you see around you? Notice the colors, shapes, and light. Take in the beauty, no matter how small.

Side note: The smaller the critter, the detail of a leaf, or the shade of a color you don’t often see, the more in-tune you become to those around you. Your family, co-workers, the lady checking you out at the store… Your empathy will begin to blossom, and you will see the world in a whole new way.

👂 Sound: Close your eyes and listen. What can you hear? Birds chirping? The hum of traffic? Let the sounds wash over you.

Side note: You don’t always have to close your eyes. Honestly, there are some moments if I close my eyes, I will lose my balance! The important thing is to just notice the sounds around you. Hone the skills of knowing what is normal, what is not, and what calms you the most.

🤲 Touch: Feel the texture of something near you—a soft blanket, a cool breeze, or the ground beneath your feet. Embrace the physical connection to your surroundings.

Side note: Some of us have texture issues and that’s okay. At least we now know what is not pleasant to have in our mindful lives.

👃 Smell: Breathe deeply. What scents are present? Fresh air? Flowers? Your favorite candle? Let them transport you to a place of calm.

Side note: Many people are sensitive to certain scents, indoors and outdoors. Some smells may trigger a wonderful memory, and some not so wonderful. Some scents can even cause asthma attacks. So, be mindful of these scents around others. Once you find the scent that relaxes you, take in a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and just be in that moment. Enjoy.

👅 Taste: Savor a bite or sip. Focus on the flavor and how it makes you feel. Simple pleasures can bring the most joy.

Side note: Stop scarfing down your food! It causes many of our digestive problems. Take time to savor what nutrients you put in your body. If you don’t have a lot of time to eat, try eating a smaller meal or snacks like grapes, blueberries, almonds, or cheese cubes. (as long as you are not allergic to them) Point is, liven up your tastebuds and really get to know what you enjoy. For me, it’s obviously coffee!

✨ When you mindfully engage your five senses, you return to the present moment—your Zen moment. ✨
